Brave Yoga: Practices for PTSD with Bill Amos

bill amos photo.jpg

Bill, a native of Northern New Jersey, has been practicing yoga since 2007. His early love of nature landed him a kayaking instructor position creating long hours in beautiful places but in cramped conditions. Wanting to enjoy all of his time on the water he took the advice of a friend to try yoga. After years of enjoying the physical benefits of yoga, the practice started taking on a different meaning and he completed his 200 RYT in 2015. His life experiences, influences as a nature photographer, and daily practice of yoga create a unique perspective that he enjoys sharing on and off the mat.

In addition to being an instructor at Prana, he offers a PTSD support Group called Brave Yoga as he has personally been diagnosed with PTSD. The group offers weekly group meditations and hikes.

Telehealth Virtual Therapy

Your story is unique.  Your story matters.  Your story is created and shaped through your personal experiences.  You may believe your experiences are either positive or negative; however, you are responsible for your thoughts, feelings, and reactions. There are no bad or negative emotions, but what you do with them is what matters.  Your thoughts, feelings, and reactions can impact how you see yourself, your future, your desires, and your goals.  And I am here to help you along this journey.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with my Doctorate in Social Work.  I have fifteen years of experience in working with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma and other related mental health disorders.  As an RYT-200, Yin-100 hour trained, and Reiki Level 1 certified, I believe a holistic and integrated model approach to therapy is best to allow you to express yourself in order to achieve your identified goals.  I use a variety of techniques including EMDR (trained in Level I and II), Trauma-Focused-CBT, Mindfulness, Meditation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and different forms of Play Therapy to help you and/or your child achieve their goals.  Therapy is a journey, and I will walk alongside this path with you and/or your child to help you restore yourself and “find your way back home” in a safe and supportive environment.

I came to the practice of Chinese Medicine as a result of a life-long desire to become a health care provider, coupled with an equally long search for a comprehensive healing system that would incorporate the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the body. My undergraduate science education led me to understand that Western medicine, although incredibly advanced in some areas, lacked an understanding of how the physical component of the body integrated with the other elements of being human.  I discovered acupuncture at the Bastyr Clinic in Seattle, Washington in 1996, and it was love at first sight.  In 2007, I completed a Masters of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York, where I studied acupuncture, herbology, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Tui Na (Chinese massage). In pursuit of furthering my education, I have studied with numerous teachers including Richard Tan (Balance Method Acupuncture), Martha Lucas (Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture), Toby Daly (Sa’am Acupuncture) and am currently in the Graduate Mentorship Program with Sharon Weizenbaum.

I believe that Chinese medicine and yoga are extremely practical tools for alleviating a wide variety of ailments, including pain, insomnia, anxiety, menstrual disorders and many, many other things.
